Embattled Ramapo School Rents Baseball Stadium Space For Classes

A New Hempstead private school that has been threatened to be shut down because of lack of water and legal electricity has been offered the use of town's baseball stadium by the Town of Ramapo, according to lohud.com.

The school accepted the offer to rent the space at $2,500 a week, acting Supervisor Yitzchock Ullman told lohud.com.

The school, Ateres Bais Yaakov Academy of Rockland at 200 Summit Park Road, opened under a temporary certificate of occupancy granted by the town of Ramapo, which performs inspections for the village of New Hempstead.

The school was allowed to open despite lack of a permanent water source, without its own electricity, and without a functional fire hydrant.

"We had hoped to see a new beginning in Ramapo – an adherence to rules, respect for safety," County Executive Ed Day said on Tuesday. "Unfortunately, it seems to be business as usual in the town of Ramapo – where any kind of development, even schools, is allowed, no questions asked."

Classes were slated to begin on Wednesday at the stadium.
